Of Walkers and Baby Gates

23 July 2007, Monday

Some of you would have seen Aiden in his much loved walker (see below pix). We have been extremely careful about the amount of time he spends on it based on advise by doctors and books on babies' muscle development and delayed walking etc etc.

Anyway, I have one less worry about it now, since his discovery of tv knobs, Astro decoder, HiFi system and all other "illegal" switches and knobs, Aiden has since refused to get onto the walker. He'd rather explore on his own.

That's besides the point, as this post is about warning mummies and daddies on potential danger of walkers even though the modern ones come with a rubber stopper at its base to stop it from moving forward when it hits uneven flooring. Aiden has learnt to carry the walker, yes - carry the walker and does a mini jump so that the walker will surge forward thus missing the rubber stopper altogether and he'll get onto the other side of the room. I have several uneven sections in my house, to differentiate between my internal courtyard/living room and wet/dry kitchen and Aiden's been jumping across for the past two weeks in both mine and my mum's place.

The danger is if he does this between the internal courtyard and living room, where the floor height between the two is about 6 inches, the walker will probably do a flip / summersault. I don’t know where he got this idea from, but you know how toddlers are these days. They learn very fast.

So these days, we have to confine him to the playpen or settle with him crawling on the floor which is much safer. Time to invest in baby gates real soon…

It's vy dangerous to use walkers on uneven grounds. Even on level ground, some walkers can speed really fast. Can't imagine what'll happen when they hit the wall or furniture at hi speed.

same with Jeriel, he never like walker. We find walker n playpen are dangerous for Jeriel...safest is to put him on the floor...

Yeah, Irfan used to do that with his walker too. Sigh. Then soon after that, he started walking, so he forgot about his walker altogether lah. And you know, we've scouted around for the baby gate, but never bought any. Hrmmm...

i have 2 walker, one is old type and from my SIL, another was newly bought just like aiden using. Of cos the nice and stable i pass to nanny, At home i seldom give him used, cos he like to pick and take things which is on the floor, until the walker like wana "terbalik" so end up i put on the floor.
Ya.. when my boy know how to walk, for sure will get a gate soon...
btw, if u got stair and kitchen, izit means going to get 2 gate ?? :( Hope u can blog about the 'gate' u going to buy in future.. So i can get some idea .. :)

wau..that's dangerous..probably it's time to get him off from walker. They said too much walker will slow down the ability to walk. If u have someone keeping an eye on him 24/7, then a gate is not that useful. I had one but never use it coz the more u put the barrier, the more they want to go over it. So, what i did is just try to distract him from walking/crawling to the dangerous area. Luckily my house does not have many uneven levels, so it's fine.

Hi! I'm new, was reading blogs and came across yours. Your son is sooo cute...Anyway, nice blog, I don't know if they have safety gates from Mothercare in Malaysia, but that's the one I use and it is quite good. It's Mothercare's own brand. If you need more info, just ask me. Cheers!

we did at one point thinking of getting a walker for ashley when she was younger...but by the time we decided, she was already walking...she improved and used to drag the ikea high chair from one end of the living hall to the other!

wah, carry and jump :s u got yourself a little hercules there hehehe

hmm i refused to get cairo a walker even though the grands were bugging me to buy one back then.

let's put it this way, with a walker, they can get to where they want with just a slight push. instead of having to drag their feet(quite laborious to them when they are learning to walk still). where is the motivation to learn to walk then??? hide it in the store la :p

oh and get a gate. way useful! i'd die w/o mine cos cairo's always hanging around outside my doorless kitchen like a little begger LOL
